What is a Body Fat Calculator?

A Body Fat Calculator estimates the percentage of fat your body contains, based on simple measurements like waist, neck, hip circumference, and height. Unlike the BMI Calculator, which only uses weight and height, a body fat calculator provides deeper insights into your actual body composition.

How Does It Work?

This tool uses the U.S. Navy Body Fat formula, which is widely recognized for its balance of ease and reasonable accuracy. For men, it relies on waist, neck, and height; for women, it also incorporates hip circumference. Here’s a glimpse of the formulas:

  • Men: 495 / (1.0324 - 0.19077 × log10(waist - neck) + 0.15456 × log10(height)) - 450
  • Women: 495 / (1.29579 - 0.35004 × log10(waist + hip - neck) + 0.22100 × log10(height)) - 450

Example Calculation

If you’re a man with a 42 cm waist, 37 cm neck, and 175 cm height, your body fat would be roughly:

495 / (1.0324 - 0.19077 × log10(42 - 37) + 0.15456 × log10(175)) - 450 ≈ 18%

Why Track Body Fat?

Knowing your body fat percentage helps tailor fitness and nutrition plans more precisely. It’s a more accurate indicator of health risks than BMI alone, especially for athletes or individuals with high muscle mass.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate my body fat percentage?

You can calculate your body fat using formulas based on waist, neck, hip measurements and height, such as the U.S. Navy method used by this calculator.

What is a healthy body fat percentage?

For men, 10-20% is generally healthy. For women, 18-28% is common. It depends on age and fitness levels.

Is BMI or body fat percentage more accurate?

Body fat percentage gives a better indication of fitness and health than BMI, as BMI doesn’t differentiate fat from muscle.

Can I calculate body fat without calipers?

Yes, this calculator only needs simple tape measurements of waist, neck, hips, and height.

How accurate is this body fat calculator?

It provides an estimate that’s reasonably accurate if you measure carefully, though not as precise as DEXA scans. }
