What is an Ideal Weight Calculator?
An Ideal Weight Calculator estimates your healthy body weight range based on your height and sex, using clinically established formulas such as Devine, Hamwi, Robinson, and Miller. These formulas were initially designed for medical dosing but are now commonly used as general health guidelines.
How Does It Work?
This calculator considers your height and biological sex to compute ideal body weight (IBW) through several standard equations:
- Devine Formula: 50 kg + 2.3 kg for each inch over 5 ft (male), 45.5 kg + 2.3 kg per inch (female)
- Hamwi Formula: 48 kg + 2.7 kg/in (male), 45.5 kg + 2.2 kg/in (female)
- Robinson Formula: 52 kg + 1.9 kg/in (male), 49 kg + 1.7 kg/in (female)
- Miller Formula: 56.2 kg + 1.41 kg/in (male), 53.1 kg + 1.36 kg/in (female)
It also provides a healthy BMI range (18.5-24.9) converted into corresponding weight values for your height.
Example Calculation
For a 5 ft 10 in male (178 cm):
- Devine: ~73 kg
- Hamwi: ~75 kg
- Robinson: ~71 kg
- Miller: ~72 kg
- BMI Range: ~59-80 kg
Benefits of Knowing Your Ideal Weight
- Helps set realistic fitness or weight goals
- Used by doctors for medication dosing and nutritional planning
- Highlights a range, not a rigid target—acknowledging natural body diversity
Limitations of Ideal Weight Formulas
These formulas don’t account for muscle mass, bone density, or body composition. For example, an athlete might exceed the ideal weight range yet still be exceptionally healthy.
